“A shawl is not an accessory. In Kashmir it is an inheritance, the thing a mother folds into a daughter's hands.”
Nilofer grew up in the valley watching shawls being made the slow way. The combing in spring, the spinning through winter, the embroiderer's needle moving for months over a single border. What she also saw was how rarely the makers were named, and how often the word pashmina was borrowed by cloth the valley would not recognise.
The house she founded carries her own name for a reason. Nilofer, the water lily, is her answer to that borrowing. It is a label that signs its work, names its artisans, and names every shawl after something real in Kashmir. A garden. A lake. The saffron fields at Pampore. The snow.
Under her direction the house works directly with spinners, weavers and embroiderers across the valley, commissioning pieces that take as long as they take, and paying for the time, not just the cloth. Each collection, from Harud to the Pashmina Catalogue, is her argument that slow things endure.
